A
Smart Walkers Guide to Personal Safety
To protect
yourself, use common sense and always walk
defensively.
1. Walk with someone - a family member, neighbor
or friend.
2. Walk purposefully with your head held up
high.
3. Tell someone where you will walk and when you
expect to return.
4. Walk during daylight hours if possible.
5. If walking at night wear reflective clothing.
6. Avoid isolated paths and dangerous roadways.
7. Carry personal identification.
8. Trust your intuition. Take action if someone
is following you. Cross the street, change
direction or walk up to a store or up to a
residence.
9. If you are in an unfamiliar city ask a
trustworthy local resident to recommend a safe
walking route.
10. Vary your route from day to day.
11. Drive an unfamiliar route before walking it.
Pay attention to road conditions, traffic and
other hazards.
12. Use extra caution when crossing
intersections.
